Sri Lanka look for convincing performance

Bangladesh are a point above Sri Lanka and although the World Cup is still at a very early stage, it is hard to imagine both sides envisioning themselves in their respective positions after their first two matches.
Sri Lanka didn't look convincing for most of their match against Afghanistan, though they won by four wickets on the back of Mahela Jayawardene's century.

Cricket: Aussies caught in 'spidercam' catch controversy

Runs came slowly for India in the face of tight bowling but there was controversy as television's "spidercam" appeared to contribute to an Australian dropped catch on in the final Test on Thursday.

Only 51 runs came off 30 overs in the third day's slow-moving morning session in Sydney for the loss of Rohit Sharma's wicket.

India went to lunch at 122 for two and trail Australia by 450 runs with Lokesh Rahul unbeaten on 50 and skipper Virat Kohli on 16.

Australia messed up two chances to dismiss Rahul on 41 and 46, the second one possibly caused by the positioning of spidercam held up by cables above the field.

The first went astray as Kohli was beaten by Nathan Lyon's flight and the ball fizzed past wicketkeeper Brad Haddin with Rahul charging down the pitch for a run.

Rahul was sent back then fell over and lost his bat yet still managed to scramble home and beat Haddin's delayed throw to the non-striker's end.

Skipper Steve Smith stood glaring at Haddin with his arms outstretched at the botched chance as India had a big let-off.

But it was Smith who was next at fault when he put down Rahul behind the wicket three overs before lunch after the Indian skied a pull shot.

Smith was seen to mouth an expletive to team-mates, which suggested he was distracted by the cables connecting the spidercam aerial TV camera.

Rahul appeared to have another chance earlier in the session when the Australians appealed for a catch by Joe Burns at bat-pad off spinner Lyon but umpire Richard Kettleborough was unmoved.

Infrared TV replays showed the ball may have brushed a glove and off the thigh guard to Burns, who did not refer the catch to the third umpire.

Sharma was out attempting to sweep Lyon only to get a bottom edge on to his stumps for 53 off 133 balls, ending a stubborn 97-run partnership with Rahul.

FIFA $100 million used to develop Brazilian football

RIO DE JANEIRO, Nov 11, 2014

Marin signed the memorandum of understanding for the fund at FIFA headquarters in Zurich along with FIFA secretary general Jerome Valcke and CBF president-elect Marco Polo Del Nero.

The fund will be used to develop Brazilian football at grassroots level and also to provide welfare provision in poor communities, the bulk of the cash being earmarked for the 15 federal states which did not host World Cup action.

"Through this legacy fund, the World Cup will be a catalyst for the development of football in Brazil, particularly at youth and grassroots level," Brazilian media and FIFA quoted Marin as saying.

Valcke said the memorandum to set up the fund "confirms FIFA's commitment towards the sustainable development of football in Brazil.

"We are convinced that the legacy fund will be an excellent platform to spread the benefits of the unforgettable 2014 FIFA World Cup," said Valcke, adding FIFA would similarly seek to promote the sustainable development of the game in future host nations.

A FIFA statement noted the fund's first project, three artificial and one grass pitch next to Belem's Estadio Ol-mpico do Para stadium, was already nearing completion.
- The President of the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF), Jose Maria Marin, Monday welcomed the signing of a memorandum enshrining implementation of FIFA's $100 million World Cup Legacy Fund.

Brazil's Tardelli double downs Argentina

Lionel Messi had a penalty saved as Brazil continued their defensive rehabilitation under returning coach Dunga with a morale-boosting 2-0 win over old adversaries Argentina in a feisty friendly on Saturday.

Atletico Mineiro striker Diego Tardelli scored once in each half, his first goals for Brazil, as former skipper Dunga made it three wins and as many clean sheets since returning to the role following the World Cup in July.

Dunga upset many fans with his negative tactics in his first spell in charge but his methods seem well timed for a proud nation still coming to terms with a 7-1 hammering at their home World Cup by eventual winners Germany that led to Luiz Felipe Scolari's sacking.

More compact and organised, the five-times world champions soaked up wave after wave of pressure before launching swift counters at the Birds Nest Stadium in the Chinese capital where soaring pollution levels subsided an hour before kick off.
Sergio Aguero and Angel Di Maria had early sighters at goal for Argentina before they fell behind in the 28th minute against the run of play following a defensive lapse worthy of Scolari's Brazil.

A right-wing cross from midfielder Oscar drew the attention of Federico Fernandez and Pablo Zabaleta, the two defenders diverting the ball to an unmarked Tardelli who fired home with goalkeeper Sergio Romero making a poor attempt at a save.
Argentina continued to press but at the other end Neymar should have made it two after a mazy dribble through the heart of the defence took him clear only to offer a tame shot that went wide after he perhaps attempted one trick too many.
The Argentines, runners-up at the World Cup, were gifted an opportunity to draw level four minutes before halftime when they were awarded a soft penalty by Chinese official Fan Qi.

Neymar lifts Brazil over Colombia in friendly

MIAMI, Sept 06, 2014 (BSS/AFP) - Neymar scored on a second half free kick as Brazil beat Colombia 1-0 Friday in their first game since their humiliating exit from their home World Cup in July. A record 73,429 spectators turned out for the friendly at SunLife Stadium. It was the largest crowd ever to see a soccer match at the south Florida venue. Brazil were thrashed by Germany 7-1 in the semi-finals the 2014 World Cup. The drubbing came one round after Brazil had beaten Colombia 2-1 in the quarter-finals. Neymar scored in the 83rd minute for the five-time World Cup champion Brazil. Midfielder Juan Cuadrado was sent off in the 49th minute for a foul on Neymar, forcing Colombia to play most of the second half a man down. Neymar, 22, was playing his first game since being named captain by new coach Dunga, who picked just 10 of the 23 man World Cup team. The move to make Neymar captain appeared to pay off as he has now fully recovered from the back injury he sustained in the victory over Colombia when he was kneed in the back by Juan Camilo Zuniga. Neymar will also captain Brazil when they face Ecuador in their second friendly on Tuesday.

Neymar return to Barcelona

The Brazilian picked up an injury during the World Cup but is on track to recover in time for the new La Liga season
Neymar has revealed that he will return to action in Barcelona's Joan Gamper Trophy pre-season clash against Leon on August 18.

The Brazilian fractured his back during the World Cup quarter-final victory over Colombia and sat out the losses to Germany and Netherlands in the semi-final and third-place play-off.

However, he is hoping to return to Barcelona for pre-season on August 5 before featuring in the annual Gamper game at Camp Nou.

"Im slowly recovering from the injury. I'll get to Barcelona 100 per cent," he told reporters at a promotional event in Brazil.

"I want to have a good season and I'm looking forward to helping my team-mates get good results. I also want to contribute to the Brazil team.

"I'm confident of playing in the Gamper game on August 18."

Neymar has since arrived in Japan to continue his recovery and work on personal commerical requirements.

World Cup Tourists Treating Local Women With Disrespect

27062014
RIO DE JANEIRO — The arrival of hundreds of thousands of raucous male soccer fans in Brazil is sparking complaints from residents that tourists are treating host cities like a playground and local women with disrespect.
For the past two weeks in Rio de Janeiro and other host cities, women say they have faced an onslaught of aggressive catcalls and other inappropriate behavior on the streets in various languages.
“They’re so rude, they don’t respect the women here,” said Gabriela Steenbuch, a 20-year-old Rio resident. She said the crude behavior is sapping the joy of the World Cup for her and her female friends who have come to dread encounters with boorish foreign men.

Why Fernandinho must start for Brazil

Paulinho hasn't made much of an impact at the World Cup so far while Fernandinho burst onto the scene in the second half against Cameroon. Here's why the latter should be starting.

Neymar has dazzled in the spotlight and carried Brazil through to the next round of the World Cup as group winners. You have no choice but to pick out the 22 year-old because in truth, he’s been their talisman and the one who regularly provides a bit of magic in attack. In fact, one may even suggest that for long periods in games, Brazil’s play has been laborious and lacking a distinct edge. Much of that is down to their engine room.
Luiz Gustavo has anchored the midfield superbly, providing stability to go along with his simplistic yet effective distribution. He keeps things ticking over and is always where he needs to be. The problem lies with his midfield partner Paulinho. The Tottenham Hotspur midfielder has bags of energy and can run all day but on the ball, he’s been ineffective and uninspiring.
